Happy Valentine's and Presidents Day from Independent Colleges of Washington

ICW and our ten member colleges have a lot of love:

  • We love the liberal arts and rigorous learning
  • We love our successful students that are well prepared for the future and ready to contribute back to the community
  • We love our donors who give over $1 million each year to financially needy students through grants, scholarships, and in-kind gifts
  • We love the diversity that our member colleges foster: culturally, economically, and intellectually
  • We love contributing $2.5 billion to the Washington economy, and we love saving the state $340 million in enrollment subsidies
  • We love the leadership of our Presidents, faculty, staff, and students

Most of all, we love investing in Washington...

Notes from the capital

Saving student aid is the focus of our efforts in Olympia.
We support fully restoring funding for State Need Grant and State Work-Study programs.

The state's budget problems -- a $2.6 billion deficit -- led Gov. Gregoire to propose an all-cuts budget in December that included $187 million in reductions to financial aid programs. The governor said she couldn't live with that, and in January proposed a budget, assuming some new revenue, that restored $146 million to the State Need Grant Program, but still cut more than $40 million from aid programs by suspending State Work Study, Washington Scholars, WAVE, and the Passport to College scholarship program for former foster youth.

Students and friends of our member colleges are playing a key role by contacting the governor and legislators in support of student aid. Since the governor made her first budget proposal in December users have sent more than 1,400 messages through our Legislative Action Center.

NOW is the time to make your voice heard!

Visit the action center today and send a note to the governor and your legislators. It will only take a few minutes. Every contact makes a difference.

Student Aid All-Stars hit a home run

All Star CardsStudent recipients of threatened state aid programs have gone major league! The first series of eighty-nine Student Aid All-Star cards were introduced to state legislators in January by our presidents. They have been traded in D.C., by our US Senators and Representatives.

The cards were produced collaboratively with ICW and financial services offices at our member colleges. The entire series can be viewed and printed at ICWashinton.org/stories

Dr. Ross receives national award

National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities (NAICU) gave its highest award, the Henry M. Paley Award to Dr. Kathleen Ross, co-founder and president of Heritage University at its recent annual meeting in Washington, D.C. Dr. Ross was honored for her extraordinary focus on students.

Dr. Kathleen Ross receives Paley award from Dr. David Warren, president of National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities, and Violet Boyer, President and CEO of Independent Colleges of Washington, who introduced Dr. Ross at the ceremony.

She joins notable higher education leaders like Fr. Theodore Hessburg, Alexander Astin, Derek Bok, as well as our own Bill Sullivan, and Dave Irwin. True to her work, her acceptance speech moved the audience talking about students who are “beacons of hope”. Also receiving an award was U.S. Representative George Miller as a strong advocate of independent colleges. Mr. Miller is the chair of the House Committee on Education and Labor.

Investing in Washington

We love hearing from our donors who inspire us and our students with their words of encouragement and support. Read what two of our recent donors said:

Nordstrom is pleased to donate to ICW as this group supports the importance of helping all students succeed to a higher level.”

From Banner Bank: “Thank you for all that your organization does to provide educational opportunities for worthy students.”

ICW donors recognize that an investment in education is an investment in a healthy and vital future for every community throughout Washington. Your company or organization can support students at all ten colleges and universities across our state with a single gift. 100% of your gift is distributed to our member colleges.

Planned Giving

Ken and Beryl Goodchild created a charitable bequest in their will that includes ICW. “Our college experiences changed our lives and allowed us to realize our dreams. We wanted to give future generations a chance to do so as well. By giving to ICW through our will we can leave a legacy that will both help students and honor our family.

Go to www.ICWashington.org/giving for more information about how you can support our students with a gift of education through a donation today, in the future, or through your estate. Education is a lasting investment!
